DSLR camera. Need Help. I mean I need help.

Hey guys, I'm thinking about purchasing a DSLR camera. Any insights?

I'm looking into this one.

It comes with the Canon's EF-S 18-55mm, f3.5-5.6 zoom lens.

I think I don't want to spend too much. So, I think I might sacrifice some pixels, and maybe get more lenses. I might go with a 6.1 instead of the 10.1. Is that a good tradeoff?

Also, do you know the difference between the Cannon XTi and the XT?

Suggestions?

That's a good camera to start with. I started with that one actually. What's the other lens?

the XT is the older version of the XTi, with 8megapixels. the kit lens isn't that great, so if you save the $100 or so and get the body only, you might be able to put that towards a better lens.

Tigress is right. Don't get the kit lens. Go for the body only and you'll save about $60. Also, if you can get a clean used body, you'll save even more.

Get this one instead. At only $90, it's a bargain of a lens. You might be able to get it for less than that used. Granted, it's not a zoom, but sometimes that's a good thing, because it makes you focus on composition. Plus that big aperture makes it a lot more versatile than a f/3.5.

Also, I'd suggest waiting a couple months, as the next version of the Rebel is coming out in April - the Xsi. When it comes out, the prices on the Xti will probably drop somewhat.

Pricegrabber.com is a good shopping bot I use all the time. It helps you comparison shop quickly, which can save you some money.

lenses are definitely the best thing to spend your money on. try to find the lowest f-stops on a lens... i.e. a "fast" lens/better in lower light... i have a nikon DSLR [the d70s] that i love. my friend wendi gave me a little lens like this one [even though this one is for canon, i thought you might like to see the canon version]. the fixed focal point lens [i.e. not zoom] is a challenge to work with, but the f/1.8 for under $100 is a fun place to start...

this is the point where you decide what brand you'll be... canon or nikon... bc as soon as you start adding lenses, you're less likely to want to change...

i got your email the other day. sorry i haven't written back. i hope you're doing well. congrats on everything. that's really exciting. it's neat to see how you've waited and now it's more clear.

love

cool marcia! 6MP is more than enuf. 10MP will take up lots of space on your computer but is good for poster-size prints. I think the lens is more important than body, I agree with your buds, the 1.8 lens is cheap and produces gorgeous results.
